Hey-ey-ey-ey, are you planning on going to an NFL game? Tailgating? Taking in the gameday environment?
If you need tips and tricks before you go, look no further! With the 2024-25 NFL season kicking off this week, I have you covered. Here is A Girl’s Guide to NFL Games!
Let’s start with outfits. Especially if you plan on tailgating, comfort is key. Wear shoes you’re ready to walk in and be on your feet in. I purposely have tennis shoes that match my team! Also, don’t forget to bring layers, between hats and socks with your team’s logos, and whether that’s a blanket or a puffer coat in your team’s colors. And if you’re looking for something that will keep you warm, but also show team spirit, check out FOCO.com for their Hoodeez, available for every team! Comfort doesn’t mean you’re not fashionable or festive! For clothing pieces, check out the team store when you’re at the game, the NFL Shop online, local sellers on Etsy, and thrift stores close to the city your team is in (you never know what you may find, and one fan's old clothing can be another fan’s treasure!). If you need inspiration, check out Pinterest for cute gameday outfit ideas. Be ready to express and embrace your team spirit!
Make sure to arrive early, and even make an entire day out of your game experience. Allow yourself to have time to join fellow fans tailgating (don’t forget to bring your favorite drink and to stay hydrated!), take part in festivities and activities (especially for fans of teams in the midwest, cornhole is a MUST), and check out the stadium (find spots for gameday pics!) and see all there is to offer. If you’re looking for food and drinks at the stadium, use this link to see Sports Illustrated's must-try menu items at every NFL stadium.
Get as involved as you can, both with tailgating and during the game! Learn your team’s chants and join in when you hear them. I know joining in on chants with other fans makes me wanna shout for my favorite team!
Other game day must-haves are hand warmers, a portable charger, and, as I was recently informed, a small piece of cardboard to stand on (it’ll keep your feet warmer during those colder games). Also make sure to check the stadium’s bag policy to see what bags and items you can bring.
If there’s something you collect, or want to start collecting at stadiums you visit or something to commemorate a game you attended, this is your reminder to stop in the team store and get it! Many fans collect first game certificates, pins, souvenir cups, shot glasses, etc. Find an item that feels special to you!
And most importantly: don’t forget to just take in the gameday atmosphere and have fun!
Special thank you to those who gave their advice on my Twitter/X, @alys216.
