Alonso resigned: what this means for the Mets

Debbie Disla

On February 5th, first baseman Pete Alonso agreed to a two-year $54 million contract with the Mets. He will make $30 million this season and a $24 million player option for 2026.

There have been multiple uncertainties about Alonso's future with the Mets this offseason. Alonso had a .240 batting average, 34 home runs and 88 RBIs, but that was considered an "off year" for him that led to severe doubts from the team and fans that he would return, especially with the signing of the four-time All-Star Juan Soto.

Pete Alonso has been incredible for the New York Mets over the course of his career. He won NL Rookie of the Year in 2019 with a rookie record of 53 home runs; won the Home Run Derby in 2019 and 2021; and is a four-time All-Star in years 2019, 2022-2024.

Alonso had a standout performance for the Mets in the 2024 playoffs with a .273 batting average, 12 hits, 4 home runs and 10 runs scored in the span of 13 games.

He also saved the Mets season in game 3 of the National League Wild Card Series against the Milwaukee Brewers. With the Mets trailing 2-0 in the top of the 9th inning, Alonso hit a go-ahead three-run homer that led the Mets to a 4-2 victory, advancing them to the next round. He became the first player in MLB history to hit a go-ahead home run while trailing in the 9th inning or later of a winner-take-all postseason game.

With the resigning of Alonso, the Mets have a legitimate chance of being contenders this upcoming season. Mets shortstop, Francisco Lindor, capitalized how it would be vital for Alonso to return: "He’s a fantastic player and person and if we have him back on our team, it would be amazing. If not, he’ll still go and do great things." With Alonso returning to the Mets, the team chemistry just got stronger thanks to the years that he and the team have been together.

With Alonso being welcomed back by the Mets, it secures a key piece of their core for the near future. With his leadership on and off the field, Alonso is looking to continue to shape the Mets’ success that makes a win-win deal for both the team and fans who are looking forward to an exciting season.
