After suffering from cardiac arrest on the field during last Monday night’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills’ safety, Damar Hamlin, is recovering at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. In the days since the horrific incident, Hamlin has received an outpouring of support from other athletes and sports fans around the world.
Bills fans are known as “Bills Mafia” and they carry the name with the utmost pride and love for their team. In December 2020, Bills QB Josh Allen lost his grandmother. In response, Bills fans donated over $1 million to a local children’s hospital that Allen supports.
There are certain events that stick with you forever. The event that unfolded during Monday Night Football is one of those. Seeing Hamlin collapse, as well as the uncertainty and fear that followed, is something that shakes everyone to their core, but it also forces us to remember how precious life really is.
Damar Hamlin started a GoFundMe page for a toy drive back in 2020, with a goal to raise $2,500 to buy toys for children in need. Since the incident during the game, Bills fans, athletes, entertainers and good samaritans have donated to his GoFundMe, which has now blossomed to over $8 million and is steadily growing.
Teams all around the league have shown their support for Hamlin and the Bills ahead of their respective regular season finales by wearing Hamlin’s No. 3 jersey during team warmups or by wearing t-shirts with the phrase “Love for Damar 3” on them.
Horrific events such as this one tend to bring people together. We witnessed that on Monday night and are continuing to see it as Hamlin recovers. It is always imperative to remember that athletes are people first, and while we all love the game of football, their lives are what matter the most. Bills Mafia is known for supporting their team in times of need. No matter what teams we normally root for on Sundays, right now we are all a part of Bills Mafia.
