As the 2025 March Madness tournament draws nearer, the competition intensifies, with top teams nationwide refining their strategies and pushing themselves to the limit. The road to the national title is filled with challenges, and every game is a chance to move closer to ultimate glory. This year, several teams are standing out as serious contenders.
UCLA: The Unbeaten Powerhouse
UCLA's perfect 13-0 record has propelled them to the No. 1 spot in the Associated Press (AP) Top 25, and they are dominating women’s college basketball. Under the leadership of Cori Close, who has been at the helm since 2011, the Bruins have established themselves as a formidable force. Junior center Lauren Betts has been exceptional, averaging nearly 20 points and 10 rebounds per game. Her 23-point performance against Washington helped UCLA secure a 73-62 win, keeping their undefeated streak alive and adding to their growing reputation.
South Carolina: Defending Champions
South Carolina, the 2023-2024 NCAA champions, continues to shine in non-conference play, even as they prepare for SEC matchups. Coached by Dawn Staley, the Gamecocks have yet to play in SEC competition this season, but their dominance in games like their 46-point victory over Wofford showcases their readiness. Te-Hina Paopao has been a key player, averaging 11.4 points per game. As they enter their SEC slate, South Carolina will face more intense competition, beginning with a game against Missouri on Thursday.
Notre Dame: A Strong Contender
Notre Dame sits at No. 3 in the rankings, despite two losses early in the season. Their strength has been tested by a tough non-conference schedule, and they have earned wins over three AP Top 10 teams. The Fighting Irish are led by sophomore Hannah Hidalgo, whose exceptional performances last year are only continuing to evolve this season. Hidalgo has elevated her game this season, now averaging 26.0 points per game in ACC play. Her continued growth makes her a key player to watch as the season progresses.
USC: The Resilient Trojans
USC ranked No. 4, remains a contender for a deep run in the NCAA tournament after making it to the Elite Eight last season. Despite a loss to Notre Dame earlier in the season, the Trojans have rebounded with eight straight victories, including a recent win over Michigan. Sophomore Juju Watkins has been a standout player for USC, averaging 25.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game. With her leadership and all-around play, USC remains a top contender for a national title.
