Comparing Manchester City Players to Taylor Swift's Reputation Album Based on 2023

Taylor Swift and Manchester City FC both achieved tremendous milestones in 2023, stunning the world with their accomplishments and by breaking records.

Manchester City is a soccer club based in Manchester, England that competes in the Premier League, the top flight of English football. Taylor Swift is an American singer-songwriter and entrepreneur who has released many albums including one called reputation in 2017. Aside from their differences in profession, both have achieved remarkable success, highlighting many commonalities for comparison and making statements in the worlds of soccer and songwriting. Here’s why some Manchester City players represent songs from reputation.

Erling Haaland: “King of my Heart''

Haaland has been an important component of Manchester City's achievements this year as their leading scorer and striker. He has performed like a soccer “king” in his individual successes by winning the Gerd Müller Trophy, the Premier League Golden Boot, the European Golden Shoe, Etihad Player of the Season, Premier League Player of the Season, Premier League Young Player of the Season, Football Writers Association Men’s Footballer of the Year, and scoring 50 goals in 48 matches in the Premier League–more than any player has ever done. He is a king not only in the hearts of Manchester City fans, but also in the hearts of football fans everywhere as a result of his outstanding stats and effect in leading this club to historic victories.

Kevin De Bruyne: “So It Goes…”

In the song, Taylor discusses many scenarios in which her relationship seems to be falling apart and sparking at the same time, particularly when emotions rise and fall. This is just like De Bruyne, who suffered a hamstring injury in the middle of August against Burnley and has been in recovery for over four months. Before undergoing surgery, he was a leader and major asset in winning games. Although he was having a lot of success in his career, his injury ended his run for the rest of the year after one game. As a professional soccer player, De Bruyne's injury has simply served to drive him to put in more effort, commit more time to his recovery, and take it seriously in order to return to the pitch and once again be the star player to kick off the new year.

Julián Álvarez: “End Game”

The song talks about having a big reputation, along with enemies, and simply wanting to be the best in the “end game,” which fits this young player due to his record breaking year with Manchester City and his country Argentina. Winning every team trophy possible within the span of a year has made enemies out of other players, his reputation is huge due to the amount of silverware he owns now, and he’s able to end games with major wins during big tournaments and competitions. Once the final whistle was blown at each big tournament or competition of 2023, he secured a trophy. That’s the best way to finish a game in the eye of any player, especially with Álvarez ending 2022 and 2023 by winning the FIFA World Cup, Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and Club World Cup.

Rodri Hernández: “I Did Something Bad”

In September 2023, Hernández “did something bad” because he received a red card within the first 27 seconds of the second half for grabbing the throat of a Nottingham player and got sent off, leaving his team with only 10 players on the field for the remainder of the game. Because of the violent act he committed, he received an automatic red card, which resulted in Hernández suffering a three-game suspension. His poor behavior cost him and his team his valuable talent and presence on the field.

As a whole, both Manchester City and Taylor Swift have “big reputations” to uphold. In 2023, Manchester City completed countless achievements in football by winning the Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and Club World Cup. It was an absolutely amazing run by all the players to lift all of these trophies together in only one year. On Taylor Swift's side, she was named Time Magazine’s Person of the Year 2023, won 10 awards at the Billboard Music Awards, the Eras Tour grossed over $1 billion, which boosted the economy, and she was Spotify’s most streamed artist globally. With these notable achievements over the last year, their reputations have grown significantly, leaving fans excited about the future and what's to come.
