The PWHL may still be new, but it’s already setting a high standard for professional women’s sports. With improved rule changes, incredible talent and commitment to its players and fans, the league has built something unique and sustainable. While it is still in its early days, some things about the PWHL just make sense. Here’s a look at a few of the best:
Jailbreak Goals

One of the most exciting rules in the PWHL is the introduction of “jailbreak” goals. Unlike traditional penalty kill formats where a penalized player must stay in the box until the two minutes run out or the opposing team scores, the PWHL’s version offers a twist: if a shorthanded team scores during the penalty kill, the player in the box is immediately released.
This rule adds a unique level of strategy and unpredictability to an already exciting moment in a hockey game. Not only does it create must-see highlights, but it also rewards aggressive, high-risk offensive play when a team is down a skater. Instead of focusing only on defensive survival during a penalty kill, teams have an incentive to push for a goal, knowing that a successful play could tilt the ice dramatically. It’s a small but impactful change that makes the PWHL even more thrilling and full of surprises.
The Merch is Actually Cool

Let’s be honest: women’s sports merchandise has often been an afterthought in the past. Oftentimes, fans have been left with basic, low quality or outdated designs that don’t match the vibrancy of the sport. The PWHL, however? It understood the assignment.
Since day one, the league has focused on clean, minimalist branding with stylish jerseys and apparel. The lack of official team names originally may have seemed like a risk, but it actually allowed for the creation of an aesthetic that appeals to all fans. Some designs are simple, while others are bold and stand out in a crowd, but each piece is instantly recognizable.
Not only is the merch for its human fans, but the league has recently released adorable pet gear so that even furry fans can rep their favourite team. From branded pet jerseys and sweaters to toys, the PWHL has made sure that every member of the family can show off their love for women’s hockey.
3-2-1 Points System

Hockey’s traditional points system has been a topic of debate for years now. The NHL still uses a format where teams can earn points in overtime losses, which sometimes leads to slower or more defensive play late in tied games. On the other hand, the PWHL has implemented a more logical 3-2-1 points system. Teams get 3 points for a regulation win, 2 points for an overtime or shootout win, 1 point for an overtime or shootout loss and 0 points for a regulation loss.
This system properly rewards and encourages teams that can close out games in regulation, rather than letting them play into overtime just to secure a point. Teams want those 3 points, which promotes high-intensity hockey and ensures that teams are rewarded fairly for their efforts. Other leagues could always start taking notes from their new competitor.
Tight-Knit Teams

Because the PWHL was built from scratch, teams had to assemble their rosters quite quickly. While that might seem like a challenge, it has actually led to incredibly special bonds being built. Tight-knit teams were formed with chemistry.
Instead of developing a roster over the years, players were selected through free agency and an original entry draft, ensuring that every team had a strong foundation. Many players had already played together on national teams at the Olympics or World Championships, or in previous professional leagues. That familiarity has translated into cohesive and structured hockey. The PWHL could’ve easily had a rocky inaugural season with disjointed teams that struggled to build chemistry. Instead, the talent and established bonds have made for some of the best women’s hockey we’ve ever seen.
The Best Professional Women’s Hockey Talents in One Place

For the first time ever in women’s professional hockey, all of the best players are competing in one league. Say goodbye to talent being split between different organizations or leagues! The PWHL brings together Olympians from all over the world, Women’s World Championship standouts, and top NCAA and international players. This has created a level of competition in women’s hockey that is unmatched. Every game features elite talent, ensuring the league is a must watch for all hockey fans.
The names across the league speak for themselves, too. With players like Marie-Philip Poulin, Hilary Knight, Sarah Nurse and Taylor Heise continuing to establish themselves as stars, the PWHL has quickly become the home of the highest level of women’s hockey on the planet. It is proving that women’s professional hockey can thrive on its own terms and it doesn't have to follow the footsteps of other leagues before it.
