Much like any other year, the Met Gala has come and gone with a roar. This year’s prestigious guest list included many athletes, including the Williams sisters and WNBA rookie Angel Reese. The theme was a bit complicated, as the carpet and gala had one theme, while the exhibit itself had another, leading to some confusion among attendees and designers. The exhibit’s theme was the Garden of Time, inspired by J.G. Ballard’s short story “The Garden of Time”. The exhibition titled “Sleeping Beauties”, was divided into three distinct sections: land, sea, and sky. It aimed to emphasize the care and time invested in preserving iconic fashion looks. The theme also played on the story’s concept, with the looks being “asleep” in the archives, and now “awakened” and displayed.

Serena Williams was one of the standouts this year. Last year, she announced her pregnancy while accompanied by her husband, Alexis Ohanian, on the carpet. This year, she dazzled in a fabulous golden Balenciaga gown, which many fashion critics assumed alluded to a gold medal, commemorating her legendary career. Venus Williams also attended, wearing a custom Marc Jacobs gown. Her outfit was silver and reflective, featuring a sheer slip overlay. The five-time Wimbledon champion looked gorgeous.

Lewis Hamilton is known for his style on and off the F1 track. Dressed by Burberry in a custom suit, Hamilton actively participated in the design process. The suit was inspired by one of Britain’s first black gardeners, John Ystumllyn, and even featured an excerpt from “The Gardener” by Alex Wharton embroidered into the lining. The ensemble was also adorned with black flowers and a beautiful necklace, completing his polished look.

Angel Reese was also spotted on the carpe, making history as the first WNBA rookie to attend. It was reported that she flew from Chicago to New York directly after practice to make it to the event. Reese looked spectacular in a shimmery seafoam gown designed by Marco Capaldo. Adding to the special occasion, it was also her 22nd birthday.

Brooklyn Nets guard, Ben Simmons, showed up in style dressed by Thom Browne. The top of Simmon’s suit featured a plaid pattern that transitioned in a sequined black, cleanly tying the whole look together. His ensemble also included a large white flower sewn onto the side of the suit, and a clock briefcase, perfectly capturing the “Garden of Time” theme.

LPGA star Nelly Korda also attended, taking a well-earned break ahead of this month’s US Women’s Open. She wore a sheer tea-length gown covered in red poppies, designed by Oscar de la Renta. Korda made history as the first professional women’s golfer to attend the Met Gala. You can check out more of Girls Club’s coverage of Nelly Korda here.

The newly signed Houston Texans running back, Stefon Diggs, made his second consecutive appearance at the Met. However, it was definitely a longer flight this year as he is no longer with Buffalo. Diggs was dressed by H&M in a dark blue sequined suit, opting for a bold look with no shirt underneath.

Diggs wasn’t the only newly signed NFL player at the event; Odell Beckham Jr. also attended, dressed by Bode. He sported a black suit (sensing a theme?) embroidered with flowers and birds, complemented by white piping. The new Dolphins player looked sharp especially considering his recent signing for about $8.25 million for one year with Miami.

When you think of Bad Bunny, sports might not be the first thing that comes to mind. However, the internationally acclaimed artist had quite the resume within the athletic world. The internationally acclaimed artist began making appearances with the WWE as a wrestler in 2021. In 2021, he began making appearances with the WW as a wrestler. He also owns a sports agency, representing clients such as Braves star Ronald Acuna Jr. and Mets star catcher Francisco Alvarez. For the Met, he was dressed in a custom Margiela suit inspired by the short story the gala was themed after.

The Met Gala continues to be a platform where athletes showcase their style and personalities beyond their athletic endeavors. From tennis legends like Roger Federer to NFL stars like Patrick Mahomes and fashion-forward figures like Naomi Osaka, athletes embrace the opportunity to make a statement on the red carpet. This year’s event saw a remarkable display of creativity and elegance across various sports. As the intersection between fashion and sports continues to evolve, we eagerly await to see what future Met Galas will bring from the sports world.
