Major League Baseball is in full swing, so let’s recap Opening Weekend and discuss who had a hot start to the 2025 season.
Hot: The New York Yankees

The Bronx Bombers lived up to their nickname last weekend after finishing Opening Weekend 3-0 due to a three-game sweep over the Milwaukee Brewers. The Yankees bats were hot as they made history on Saturday, hitting nine home runs and scoring 20 runs in one game. This game made them the first team in MLB history to have the first six hitters in their lineup hit homers all in the same day.
The Bombers outscored the Brewers 36 to 14, hitting 15 home runs on the weekend, setting a franchise record for most runs scored in the first three games of the season. Reigning American League MVP Aaron Judge is leading this offense, with a 3 home run game on Saturday. The Yankees currently sit in second place in the East and will look to win the American League once again.
Hot: Los Angeles Dodgers

It’s no surprise the reigning world champions are off to a hot start this 2025 season. The Dodgers are just one of two teams in the league who still remain undefeated in this current moment. After opening their season 2-0 and sweeping the Chicago Cubs in the Tokyo Series, the Dodgers hot streak continued through Opening Day.
They finished Opening Weekend 5-0 with yet another sweep over the Detroit Tigers at home. LA has had lights out starting pitching and their bats have been popping, especially due to the return of Mookie Betts from illness. They have just continued right
where they left off last October.
Hot: San Diego Padres

The National League West division surge continues as the Padres are the second team who remain undefeated. They are currently second in the NL West, just behind their crosstown rival Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Padres made a huge statement after sweeping the Atlanta Braves in a four game set on Opening Weekend, which included two shutouts. San Diego’s pitching limited Atlanta’s offense to just seven runs on the weekend. They then went on to sweep the Cleveland Guardians in a three-game set, which also included one shutout.
Not: Atlanta Braves

Let’s flip the script and discuss clubs who have not had a hot start to their 2025 season, starting with the only winless team remaining: the Atlanta Braves. The Braves have not been able to pick up a win yet this season. They are currently 0-7, last in the NL East. No team that has ever started the season 0-7 in Major League Baseball history has made the postseason.
The struggles continue for Atlanta as they just lost LF Jurickson Profar to an 80-game suspension due to PED usage. Although it is still early, the Braves need to turn things around if they want a chance in the very competitive NL East.
Not: Milwaukee Brewers

The Brewers’ 2024 postseason caliber team has greatly declined in 2025. As previously mentioned, they got demolished by the Yankees on opening weekend. Pitching has been their greatest weakness thus far, after losing their closer Devin Williams to the Yankees.
They lack pitching depth both in the starting rotation and the bullpen. They had position players pitch against the Yankees in both Saturday and Sunday’s games because of the damage the Bombers lineup was doing. Their offense has also been quieter than expected, so hopefully they can pick things up in the NL Central.
Not: The American League Central

There is currently a five-way tie for first in the AL Central. Every team currently sits at 2-4, however the Chicago White Sox appear to be at the top of the division. The Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals made incredible postseason runs last season and both are favorites to win the Central in 2025 but have had an extremely slow start to their seasons.
The AL Central is typically not one of the more competitive divisions in the league, but this year it appears as though it may be different.
Many of these teams have shocked baseball fans across the country, whether in good or not so good ways. Although it is still early, it is interesting to see teams no one expected to come out swinging right out of the gate and even those who are underperforming. Baseball is so unpredictable and this season should be another good one.
