The Ever Toppling Top 25

Updated: Oct 25

We are finally at midseason for college football and getting ready to go into Week Nine. Like always, the AP poll has been released weekly. If you don’t know what the AP poll is, it is the official ranking of the top 25 NCAA teams. It isn’t super important until later on in the season when playoff discussion starts, but it is good to keep up with especially to keep track of how well your team is doing in comparison to the other top teams. Let’s see how the polls after Week Eight compare to pre-season polls.

Oregon went from 2nd to 1st after a 35-0 victory against Purdue on Friday, Oct 18. Dillion Gabriel, Oregon’s quarterback, earned an 81.3 passing grade for that game. Oregon is the fourth team in the last nine weeks to be the first in the Top 25.

Georgia beat previously ranked No. 1 Texas 30-15. This win got them higher up on the polls this week, moving from sixth to second overall. Their defense was a big reason for their victory over the Longhorns.

Penn State stayed comfortably at their No. 3 spot while they enjoyed their bye week. Their next game will be against Wisconsin on the 26th.

Ohio State also had a bye week and will play Nebraska on the 26th.

Texas fell from 1st to 6th this week after they had their first loss of the season. Quinn Ewers had the worst game of his career thus far against the Georgia Bulldogs in Austin.

This brings up a lot of talk about whether Arch Manning is going to be stepping up into the starting quarterback position anytime soon.

Miami (FL) fell from its previous rank of fourth overall. Though, the Hurricanes beat Louisville 52-45 this past week. Cam Ward, their quarterback, is still looking to be one of the best, if not the best, quarterback this year.

Tennessee moved from 14th overall all of the way up to seventh overall after a 24-17 win against Alabama. Alabama (as a team) performed well but some feel that Jalen Milroe, their quarterback, did not perform as well as he could have. The Crimson Tide will play Mizzou for their Week Nine game in Tuscaloosa.

LSU moved from 11th to 8th after a win 34-10 against Arkansas. Unfortunately, the Tigers were unable to cause any turnovers, as the Razorbacks were able to do so three times. They travel into College Station this weekend to face Texas A&M for the top spot in the SEC.

We are just now heading into Week Nine and there have already been some big surprises with the rankings. The Top 25 gives a good idea of where teams are ranked right now, but there’s still plenty of time left for teams to change their playoff outlook.
